The first batch of the Flying Ointment Eau de Parfum consists of 500 bottles, hand-poured, blended and bottled. Each label is hand done by a master calligrapher and individually numbered 1 of 500. No two are precisely alike. 

WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?

We've taken the Flying Ointment salve and translated it into a fine fragrance, one that smells magical and mysterious, like a vial you'd find on an apothecary shelf. Sacred resins smoldering in the shadows; frankincense, labdanum and copal, entwine with guiacawood to create an intoxicating veil of smoke and ancient ritual. Vetiver and traces of oakmoss ground it in earthiness.

“When I created our Flying Ointment salve, something happened that I hadn’t entirely anticipated. The strange collection of botanical materials I chose for their histories, rituals and uses created this extraordinary fragrance of its own. I became obsessed with it and followed that obsession to create a small release of the Flying Ointment Eau De Parfum.

If you want to smell like you’ve been deep in the woods, digging in the dirt, pulling roots from the earth, crushing leaves between your fingers, then this scent is for you. Dark. Earthen. Medicinal. Feral. It feels like you are wrapped in the forest floor, grounded, connected and protected by these plant allies.

I made this for those who don’t want to smell pretty. They want to smell interesting. Made by Heretics For Heretics.”

Flying ointments, or unguenta volandi, have long occupied the obscure territory between medicine, magic, folklore, and altered states: mysterious preparations associated with witches, night journeys, and transformation.

Gatherings that took place beyond the limits of ordinary perception. Figures seen in the darkness not walking, but arriving. They come anointed. Accounts from the 15th and 16th centuries describe preparations composed of botanical extracts, resins, and fats, applied to the body with intention. The flying ointment was a preparation for passage, applied beneath the cover of darkness, that was believed to safeguard the individual. A ritual to prepare the body, mind, and spirit for the dream state.

Our Flying Ointment reimagines this ancient mythology as a nightly ritual of passage.

In sleep, the senses slowly withdraw and the waking mind begins to dissolve. The scent of this natural perfume opens another door. Omani frankincense, a resin with an ancient history of ceremonial and ritual use, combines with guiacawood, copal, and other purifying ingredients to draw attention inward. Together, these resins and herbs create an atmosphere for withdrawal.

The threshold is marked.
